The Winking Prawn, Salcombe, Devon

One of the watercolour and ink wedding paintings - how it was done

Source photos and used to make a decent composition

The sketch is rubbed away as much as possible. Important whites are preserved with masking fluid (the writing on the sign).

Under-painting is done with semi-random strokes and splatters of:

- cerulean blue

- raw sienna

- burnt sienna

- alizarin crimson

These colours form the basis of all of the paintings in this wedding series, giving unity when they are seen together. They are all the same size and use the same tonal range. The only addition on some paintings is a light touch of ultramarine.

Watercolour painting washes are added, plus permanent black ink

The final painting. Every painting in the series has the initials of the bride and groom, plus some little love hearts. This one also has the date of the wedding.
